Start more ambitiously with the FluentPet Get Started Kit, featuring six buttons. Upgrades are one of FluentPet’s key advantages over competing dog talking buttons; there is a 12-button Basic Vocab Kit and 32-button They Can Talk Kit available, with one button for every word in their suggested list of introductory words; plus additional buttons and Hextiles can be purchased separately from FluentPet.

FluentPet kits include 67 ideogram (picture word) stickers to mark your buttons, as well as batteries. To begin using FluentPet, record yourself saying a word or phrase and attach a Hextile; once your pet becomes familiar with pressable buttons they’ll begin associating it with specific actions in time.

Watch these buttons come to life by following @whataboutbunny on Instagram where Bunny the talking labradoodle can be seen demonstrating them.

Hunger was consulted for this article as she developed this brand of talking-button for canines. A pioneer in applying human speech-language science to dog training, Hunger created this kit as the ideal starter set for anyone interested in giving their dog some vocabulary.

“As founder of the Talking Pet Movement, I combined my background in speech-language pathology, human communication devices and years working with Stella my own dog to design tools and resources to assist average pet owners in learning how to teach their own pet. Each product comes complete with a step-by-step teaching guide which shows you exactly how you can set up your pet for maximum success.”

The Starter Set includes four plastic communication buttons and a beginner guide, powered by AAA batteries (sold separately). The guide will teach you to recognize and build upon your dog’s current communication patterns to give them voice and help both of you understand each other more clearly. In addition, an optional Talking Pet Mat may help keep buttons secure.

Starter Set of four Buttons can get your project underway quickly. As soon as you need more words, check out Talking Pet Next Words sets to add names and locations, or the pre-recorded Talking Pet Essential Words sets. Furthermore, magnetic Goal Tracker sets can keep you organized and motivated!

Though these buttons weren’t designed specifically with dogs in mind, they work extremely well in this application. Although similar to Hunger for Words Talking Pet Set buttons, these don’t come equipped with foam pads or any kind of guide so it will be up to you to figure out your own way to secure them (I used foam floor tiles meant for toddlers and Velcro from fabric stores during testing at home). I used online training videos as well as Hunger’s book to teach Kuma several words in just a couple weeks!

These inexpensive microphones make recording up to seven seconds of sound simple with just one press of a red button on the side – although our dog occasionally accidentally triggers it and erases recorded word! Unfortunately, it’s not completely protected, which has lead to its occasional accidental activation erasing our recordings altogether.

These buttons require two AAA batteries which are not included. Their large size makes them suitable for large breeds but may prove more challenging for smaller breeds to work with than kits with smaller buttons. In addition, these take up more floor space.
